How to

  • Show your NIF

    1. Open NIFly. The barcode is on top, the digits below.
    2. Tap the barcode or the digits to fill the screen with either; tap again to go back.
    3. The screen goes to full brightness by itself and returns when you leave.

  • Have it read aloud

    1. Tap the speaker at the top of the screen.
    2. For a slower reading, open the ... menu and turn on Speak slowly.

  • Copy or share it

    1. Tap the copy button at the top, or open the ... menu and choose Share.

  • Add more NIFs

    1. Open the ... menu and choose Profiles, then tap +.
    2. Type the NIF, or tap the camera to scan a paper card.
    3. Swipe left or right on the main screen to change profile.

  • Choose the default and the order

    1. In Profiles, swipe a profile to the right and tap Make default.
    2. Tap Reorder, then drag the handles.

  • Put it on the Lock Screen

    1. Touch and hold the Lock Screen, then tap Customize.
    2. Add a widget and search for NIFly. "NIF" shows the digits, "NIF barcode" a barcode that scans.
    3. Touch and hold a widget to choose which profile it shows.

  • Use the Action button or a control

    1. Settings, Action Button, Controls: search for NIFly and pick Show NIF or Say NIF.
    2. For Control Center: swipe down from the top-right corner, hold an empty area, tap Add a Control.

  • Ask Siri

    1. "Show my NIF in NIFly", "Say my NIF with NIFly", "Copy my NIF with NIFly".
    2. Replace "my" with a profile name to choose one: "Show Company NIF in NIFly".

  • Keep it off the Lock Screen

    1. In Profiles, turn on Hide on Lock Screen.
    2. Lock Screen widgets show a lock; a tap opens NIFly after Face ID.

  • Unlock, or restore a purchase

    1. In Profiles, tap + with one profile already there.
    2. Buy once, or tap Restore purchases if you already have.

  • What is NIFly?

    NIFly is an independent iPhone app, made by Relay Spatial, that shows your Portuguese tax number (NIF, Número de Identificação Fiscal) at the till. NIFly shows the NIF as a scannable barcode and as large digits, and can read it aloud with on-device text-to-speech. NIFly works without an internet connection and keeps the NIF on your iPhone.

  • Why do shops in Portugal ask for my NIF?

    In Portugal a shop puts your nine-digit NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal, also called número de contribuinte) on the invoice when you ask for it, and reports that invoice to the tax authority's e-Fatura system. It happens a lot: 930 million invoices carried a NIF in the first half of 2024 alone, according to the tax authority's figures, well over a hundred a year for every resident. NIFly makes giving the number quick; it does not file or check anything for you.

  • Is NIFly free?

    Yes. NIFly is free for one NIF, with every feature: barcode, large digits, speech, widgets, the Action button and Siri. A one-time unlock of €1.99 adds more profiles. NIFly has no subscription and no ads.

  • Is NIFly an official app?

    No. NIFly is an independent app. It is not affiliated with Autoridade Tributária e Aduaneira, and it does not connect to any tax service.

  • Where does NIFly store my NIF?

    NIFly stores your NIF on your iPhone, and it is included in your own backups of the iPhone. NIFly has no account and no server, and sends nothing to us or anyone else.

  • Will every shop be able to scan the NIFly barcode?

    Most shop scanners read the NIFly barcode. Where one does not, or there is no scanner, the cashier types the large digits NIFly shows with it.

  • Does NIFly work without an internet connection?

    Yes. NIFly works completely offline: showing the NIF, scanning a card and reading it aloud need no connection, and neither does the unlock once bought.

  • What does the NIFly unlock add?

    The NIFly unlock adds more than one profile now, and Apple Watch when it arrives. It costs €1.99, paid once. The free NIFly app is complete for one NIF.

  • Can NIFly keep my company's NIF as well as my own?

    Yes. NIFly keeps each NIF as a profile with its own name and colour, for example one personal and one for your company (its NIPC), and you swipe between them. The free NIFly app holds one profile; the one-time unlock of €1.99 adds more.

  • How do I get my NIFly purchase on a new iPhone?

    In NIFly on the new iPhone, add your first profile, then open Profiles, tap + and choose Restore purchases. In this version NIFly does not copy profiles between devices, so add them again on the new iPhone.

  • Can NIFly hide my NIF on the Lock Screen?

    Yes. In NIFly, open Profiles and turn on Hide on Lock Screen. NIFly's Lock Screen widgets then show a lock, and a tap opens NIFly after Face ID.

  • How do I get a refund for the NIFly unlock?

    Apple handles NIFly purchases and refunds. Ask at reportaproblem.apple.com.

  • Which iPhones does NIFly work on?

    NIFly needs an iPhone with iOS 26.5 or later.
